Job Description
Senior Detail Designer
The Senior Detail Designer is responsible for completing Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfitting design assignments on new construction and repair projects at Vancouver Shipyards. Under the direction and leadership of the Manager, Outfitting Detail Design, the Senior Detail Designer participates in all phases of new construction design projects, including 3D model and drawing development, design preparations, engineering support, design execution, design activities and production support.
NOTE: Due to business needs, this position is required to be fully on-site based at 2 Pemberton Avenue, North Vancouver, B.C. V7P 2R1
What you’ll do
- Provides subject area expertise and leadership to lead and define program technical requirements, CAD modelling, develop processes/standards, class rules and regulations, quality standards, and discipline design development strategies and/or plans.
- Delivers comprehensive discipline expertise by supporting the development and reviewing technical design proposals, scopes of work, budgets and resource estimates.
- Supports the project manager and planning department in the development of the discipline-based schedule and the integration with the overall master schedule.
- Develops and delivers, while providing mentorship to the less experienced designers, discipline-specific 3D Modelling and Production Information drawings.
- Develops and delivers integrated 3D models and manufacturing information (MI), and supports programs through product, test, verification and in-service support.
- Cost, schedule and quality responsibility for the discipline’s scope execution within a project for both in-house resources as well as subcontracted resources.
- Drives collaboration and integration with relevant stakeholders (e.g., Functional Engineering, Detail Design Subcontractors, Planning, Procurement, and Production) to coordinate the scope execution for the assigned scope.
- Responsible for overall discipline technical coordination and design integration for assigned scope. Liaison with other relevant stakeholders to resolve major and significant discipline design issues.
- Collaborate with System Responsible Engineer to resolve design issues.
- Provides technical support for production.
- Develops material specifications and bills of material in accordance with Seaspan material strategies and customer requirements.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
What you’ll bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, or a relevant Engineering discipline is required.
- 5+ years in the shipbuilding field working very closely with the production floor is required.
- Experience working with classification society requirements is required.
- Previous shipyard and marine industry experience is required.
- Experience with AutoCAD software and document control systems is required.
- Experience working with a diverse integrated project team is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of CADmatic software and building information required for production drawings is required.
- Knowledge of marine Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfitting design, including detailed knowledge of hull outfitting and interior outfitting systems and production best practice is required.
- Knowledge of the following ship types is considered a strong asset: icebreakers, research vessels, multi-purpose vessels, fishing vessels, naval auxiliary vessels.
- Knowledge of icebreaker specific Hull Outfitting and Interior Outfitting systems or experience with icebreakers vessels design and/or construction would be an asset.
- Demonstrated ability of working independently to develop solutions to sophisticated technical problems.
- Managing internal and external people assigned to the projects, driving and leading them to reach the project’s completion.
- Above average analytical skills to gather and analyze/synthesize data, confirming its accuracy and adequacy as an integral part of the collective analysis/synthesis process.
- Strong technical writing skills including the ability to produce and present clear, detailed written technical specifications, procedures, and reports
- Ability to work independently to develop solutions to complex technical problems.
- Knowledge of Rhino, NavisWorks and SharePoint is an asset
- Organizational skills include the ability to maintain organized in a changing environment, multi-task and establish priorities.
- Committed to a high standard of safety and able to follow all safety laws, regulations and all the employer's safety policies and rules.
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, above average communication skills including written, verbal, listening and presentation are required.
- Sound judgements and ability to make decisions in a manner consistent with the essential job functions and corporate philosophy.
- Advanced PC and Network proficiency with ability to troubleshoot network licenses, version control across all MSOffice.

The estimated salary for this position is $112,500-137,500. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
