Work where you matter. Vancouver Island University is an amazing place of opportunity and we are currently looking to fill the role of Workplace Trainer for our Access Programs, Cowichan Campus. Applications will be accepted online for this permanent, part-time role until June 6 (18-3085).


As the Workplace Trainer for our Cowichan Campus Access Programs, you will provide hands-on workplace training and supervision of students in a variety of workplaces, supporting the transfer and application of classroom learning to the workplace.


You will contribute workplace training for students in job and employability skills accommodating learning styles, strengths and disabilities and provide safety training and monitoring, following WorkSafeBC and VIU protocols and complete workplace evaluation checklists with employers and students. Other duties may include:

  • Implement skill training plans and adapt to individual needs, with related monitoring of skill development.
  • Provide ongoing feedback and support to students in performing work tasks and applying skills in the workplace.
  • Acquire and maintain work experience/training placement locations for students.
  • Provide information, support and direction to students, employers, community support staff and practicum students in relation to WEST training.
  • Under direction of WEST Faculty, assist in student performance reviews and participate in exit transition planning to facilitate successful outcomes for students.
  • Maintain effective and ongoing communication with other team members to ensure consistency in goals and methodologies.
  • Maintain checklists.
  • Participate in staff meetings and other meetings.


Required Qualifications:

Two-year post-secondary diploma in related discipline, or equivalent, from an appropriately accredited institution, and minimum five years' recent experience working with people with disabilities. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
