The successful candidate will be a part of Aspect’s diverse and multi-disciplinary R&D group. Specifically, they will be part of a high performing team focused on developing bioprinted therapeutic tissues for implantation with a focus on metabolic diseases such as diabetes. The individual will be working on the development of a pancreatic tissue patch device that supports islet cell function and fitness in an immune-protected manner using Aspect’s unique, microfluidic-based bioprinting platform. This position will require extensive experience in immunology, biomaterial development, and biomedical device design targeted for cell therapy and/or organ transplantation. A track record of working on pancreatic islet transplantation, micro/macro-encapsulation approaches, or stem cell biology with relevance to islets are a positive. Specific training, particularly on the 3D bioprinting system, will be provided, but the individual will be expected to perform most tasks with minimal supervision.

Core tasks will include:

  • Developing novel biomaterials and material processing systems for supporting stem cell-derived therapeutic cells in bioprinted tissue scaffolds that possess an immune-protected character.
  • Conducting in vitro assays to quantitively assess islet cell function, fitness, and immune-protection in bioprinted tissue patches.
  • Engaging with external partners and CROs to design, analyze, and interpret experimental endpoints for preclinical in vivo assays to evaluate printed tissue device biocompatibility, efficacy, and immune-protection.
  • Working closely with internal researchers and external partners to iteratively improve biomaterial performance and bioprinted tissue device design based on their data and feedback, as well as surveying the most up-to-date literature and public presentations related to development of biomaterials, cells, and devices for islet transplantation.
  • Participating in internal Tissue Engineering R&D meetings and tissue program specific meetings.
  • Coordinating and documenting meetings with external academic and/or industry partners.
  • Ensuring proper documentation of biomaterial development and bioprinted device design and testing activities perfumed under GLP conditions.
  • Contributing to scientific publications, conference abstracts, patents, and grant applications.
  • Initially investing >75% of one’s effort on laboratory-based research.


  • PhD in cell biology, immunology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or a related discipline. Individuals with other advanced degrees and a demonstrable track record in stem cell biology, islet transplantation, biomaterial development, or biomedical device design will be considered for the role.
  • Experience working with, designing, and characterizing biomaterials focused on cell therapy, immune-protection, or transplantation
  • Experience in islet transplantation, islet biology, immune cell-based in vitro, and microfluidic perfusion systems is a plus.
  • Experience in stem cell biology and/or immunology, particularly in the use of in vitro immune cell-based assays and analytics.
  • Experience in biomedical device design for targeted cell and/or tissue therapies.
  • Track record of working with preclinical in vitro and in vivo models to assess cell or tissue therapy function.
  • Deep understanding of analytical tools to assess cell/tissue device biocompatibility, efficacy, and durability is a bonus.
  • Experience in a goal-oriented research environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced and self-directed environment, document detailed results, and communicate to peers and customers.
  • Attention to detail, organized, and thorough in completing tasks.
  • Strong teamwork skills.
