Ballard's Research team has a regular, full-time position available for a Test Technician or Technologist at our Burnaby location. Reporting to the Team Lead, Characterization, Prototyping and Methods Development (CPMD), the successful candidate will work within the CPMD team with research scientists and engineers to support cathode catalyst layer development testing and MEA material characterization.

Responsibilities:
  • Conduct hands-on characterization of cathode catalyst layers and MEA designs to support material specifications and technology development
  • Support development of new components to meet the needs of current and next generation products - key focus on cost reduction and performance improvements
  • Prepare test articles, conduct characterization of fuel cell materials, and potentially operate fuel cell test stations
  • Conduct a variety of material and ink characterization techniques, and participate in the development of new techniques
  • Collect, analyse, and summarize test data using excel
  • Work effectively within a research team of scientists and research engineers to accomplish technical objectives
  • Troubleshoot instrument and equipment problems


Requirements:
  • Technology Diploma in materials, chemistry or engineering from a recognized college or equivalent program
  • 1 - 3 year's relevant experience
  • Previous experience working with fuel cell materials, ink processing, CCM and MEA manufacturing processes, characterization techniques, fuel cell testing and/or working in a lab environment is preferred
  • Experience with materials testing and mechanical and chemical analysis
  • Experience with creating new structures and component fabrication is an asset
  • Strong organizational skills, analytical skills and hands-on capability and aptitude
  • Ability to work as part of, and support, a small team of research scientists, engineers, and technologists
  • Fuel cell testing and cyclic voltammetry, impedance, and other analytical tools/methods experience is an asset
  • Working knowledge of excel
  • Ability to work independently and follow detailed instructions is critical
