Lumerical is a leading developer of photonic simulation software – software which enables research and development professionals to predict how light behaves within complex structures, circuits, and systems.  Photonics unlocks many possibilities for the world’s most innovative companies who increasingly rely on virtual prototyping to explore new product concepts, optimize designs without creating physical prototypes and deliver on their ambitious product development goals. 

As a Support Engineer, you will work closely with customers to help them achieve their R&D goals using Lumerical’s industry-leading photonic design software.  In addition to providing technical support, you may provide on-site product training and are responsible for developing a wide range of technical content including documentation, application examples and training courses. Support Engineers are a crucial resource regarding product usage and customer feedback and therefore often work closely with the Sales, Marketing, Customer Experience and R&D teams.  

As one of the primary intermediaries that exist between Lumerical and their customers, you will have excellent interpersonal skills, a keen interest in physics, and a desire to apply proven technical skills to solve R&D problems currently faced by leading technology companies around the world.  


  • Fielding challenging enquiries regarding product usage in advanced applications; 
  • Creating and maintaining product training courses for both live and online delivery;  
  • Enhancing Lumerical’s documentation and application examples by developing simulation methodologies to address novel customer problems; 
  • Identifying promising areas for future products through interaction with customers; 
  • Working with the R&D team to test and develop new products; and 
  • Traveling, up to 20%, to understand customer needs, offer support and conduct training. 

Minimum qualifications 

  • A graduate degree in Engineering Physics, Physics or Electrical Engineering with a focus on photonics or opto-electronics; 
  • Experience with Lumerical’s products or other photonic simulation tools; 
  • Good understanding of photonic science, applications and technologies; 
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English; and 
  • A keen interest in working with customers to ensure their success; and 
  • Technical writing experience and attention to detail.

Preferred qualifications 

  • Experimental or theoretical knowledge of photonic applications of industrial interest including photonic integrated circuits, optical communication systems, solar cells, LEDs, or CMOS image sensors; 
  • Graduate level courses in solid state devices; 
  • Familiarity with EDA design flows, including compact model development and validation; 
  • Additional languages including Japanese, Chinese, or Korean; and
  • Experience managing an online community or being a forum moderator.
