As a
Strategic Sourcing Engineer with Ballard Power Systems, you will be the Supply Chain point of contact for suppliers engaged in new product development technologies used in our hydrogen fuel cell stacks and modules. You will be responsible for working with the R&D, Technology & Product Development Engineering, Quality and Purchasing teams to identify, establish and support selection/qualification of strategic suppliers and components. This position will be primarily focused on market assessment and identification of new suppliers and component technologies required to support new product design and introduction, as well as selective existing products undergoing design changes or for support in technical issues.
Actively engaging with the R&D, Technology & Product Development Engineering, System Engineering, Quality and Purchasing teams to facilitate early supplier involvement during new product introduction, you will work cross functionally to progress, qualify and validate short list suppliers and components while performing a phased hand over to quality and purchasing to nominate approved suppliers and components in preparation for production readiness at the lowest total cost.
Responsibilities: - Research potential sources of supply for purchased products to ensure prices are globally competitive and sufficient production capacity is available within the supply chain. Understand the market price or "Should Cost" price for key strategic components
- Act as a technical liaison between suppliers, Research & Development and Technology & Product Development Engineers, Quality and Purchasing teams
- Manage sourcing activity coordination and processes for sourcing duties relating to new product development, including leading or participating in cross functional teams to perform supplier selection, capability assessment, quality improvement, and supplier readiness assessments
- Work cross functionally with Quality, Purchasing and Engineering teams to improve and maintain the process of supplier development, supplier and component evaluation and nomination and supplier performance scorecards
- Work with Cost Accounting and Cost Engineering to perform "Should Cost Analysis" on key strategic components to facilitate lowest total cost of ownership in our product design
- Research new technologies with potential to enhance existing and next generation product designs as well as offer lowest total cost for the product design
- Work with Quality and Purchasing to develop and implement strategies to improve supplier productivity/quality, and ensure supply chain continuity, where required
- Provide weekly, monthly, and quarterly reports on progress and opportunities to management and project management teams
- Facilitate and lead Value Analysis and Value Engineering (VA/VE) processes
- Support root cause problem investigation and resolution through design prevention
- This position requires a minimum of 15-20% of your time to be allocated to travelling to suppliers and joint venture partners, under normal business conditions
Requirements: - Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Electro-Mechanical Engineering
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in procurement, engineering, supply chain and/or quality management
- Experience within a technical volume manufacturing environment, including leading and supporting multiple Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) phases simultaneously
- Experience in working cross functionally on creation of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), supplier and component assessment documentation, and on-site audits, and change control processes
- Experience in creating, issuing and analyzing RFI/RFP/RFQ and supplier cost break down documents, along with using your exceptional negotiation skills and proven ability to use product design knowledge to assist reduction in unit cost and optimization of supplier capacity allocation for Ballard
- Knowledge of and able to discuss the manufacturing processes for mechanically components (e.g. injection molding, die casting, air compressor manufacture and assembly) and electrical components (e.g. PCBAs, wiring harnesses, electrical motors and controllers, DCDCs)
- Ability to perform in a team environment with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
