The Geomatics Technician is responsible for creating digital, graphic and descriptive products to support planning through the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS). Job Requirements:
  • Diploma in geographic information systems or in a resource management field such as geography, biology, agriculture, environmental science or other related field plus one (1) year of GIS related experience.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver's Licence or equivalent.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one (1) or more of the following:
    • emergency management or natural resource management;
    • automating or scripting solutions using tools such as Python or other programming languages (e.g.: Java Script), FME, SQL;
    • editing data and map making (not web mapping) using GIS tools, such as: ARCGIS or QGIS or other GIS software platforms; and/or,
    • project management.

  • To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
  • To keep current on emerging issues.
  • To take in-house training and certification as required.
  • To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  • To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
  • To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  • To be assigned or participate to Incident Command System positions and Incident Management Teams as required.
  • To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.

This position can be located in Kamloops, Victoria, or other BC Wildfire Service Fire Centre/Zone subject to operational requirements and space availability at time of offer.
