Ballard's Stack Test Engineering team has an exciting opportunity for a Fuel Cell Test Engineer (E2) in our Burnaby, BC headquarters. As a Stack Test Engineer, you will be looking to find the limits of new fuel cell technology in a world-class test lab, surrounded by industry experts. If you are a highly motivated individual who enjoys the challenge of a fast-paced environment and the satisfaction of taking an idea from concept into production, we want to hear from you!

The Ideal Candidate:

You have a solid understanding of engineering principles, data analysis, and statistical methods and can effectively present your work with strong communication and interpersonal skills. You enjoy hands-on work and apply strong structured problems solving and troubleshooting skills. Bonus points for previous testing experience, DFMEA experience, and Excel VBA, Python, or MATLAB programming skills.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop test plans based on DFMEA and requirements documentation
  • operate test stations to evaluate fuel cell performance and durability;
  • analyze data using appropriate statistical tools, and link observations to physical mechanisms;
  • design and build test fixtures and prototype fuel cells to support product development;.
  • assess structural, thermal and fluid flow behaviour in designs and prototype hardware using analysis methods;
  • work with customers to resolve stack-system interface issues during development and in the field;
  • follow sound engineering practice regarding design documentation, document control, change management and failure investigations. Improve designs through the application of sound engineering practices, such as 8D problem solving and FMEA; and
  • work with Research, Supply Chain, and Manufacturing to resolve technical issues and produce successful production components.
  • supervise junior engineers and technologists to ensure high quality of work output


Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Science or Engineering. 3+ years of related experienced is required.
  • Working knowledge of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, strength of materials, and materials science.
  • Working knowledge of engineering instrumentation and the application of statistics to data analysis.
  • Hands-on experience of mechanical & electrical component fabrication an asset.
  • Working knowledge of fuel cells stacks or systems is desirable.
  • Occasional travel may be required to resolve customer issues.
  • Strong oral & written communications skills required.
