Ballard Power Systems has a regular full-time position available for a Sr. Test Engineer at our Burnaby location with the Stack Test Engineering team. Ballard is a leading clean energy company focused on making hydrogen fuel cell technology and in Stack Test Engineering team, we use our expertise as testing specialists to understand the limits of Ballard's technologies. We highlight where materials are weak or will fail and ultimately drive engineering improvements.

The Ideal Candidate:

You have a solid understanding of engineering principles, electrochemistry, data analysis, and statistical methods and want to apply them to interesting technical problems. You enjoy hands-on work and have a passion for coming up with interesting experiments to understand fundamental phenomena. Further, you enjoy working with people, are customer focused and enjoy leading teams on technical topics. Bonus points for an understanding of electronics, programming, and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development of sensitive fuel cell measurement tools to drive fundamental understanding and modeling
  • Lead the technical activities of a team of 3-5 engineers and technologists
  • Support technical problem solving by developing key experiments to answer tough questions
  • Develop and execute test plans in close collaboration with internal and external customers
  • Collaborate with component owners to develop and refine test methods
  • Create new methods to enhance the team's capabilities
  • Create databases for test data and key results
  • Support safety audits of new test setups
  • Analyze data and prepare appropriate reports and/or presentations to support your findings
  • Present to internal and external customers

  • B.Sc. degree in Engineering Physics, Mechanical, Chemical, Materials, Fuel Cell or related Engineering program with 5 - 10 years of related experience
  • Fuel Cell Electrochemical experience, including but not limited to:
    • Fuel Cell Testing and Data Analysis
    • Advanced Fuel Cell Testing: EIS, designing and executing fuel cell test protocols and maintaining a fuel cell test aparatus
    • Knowledge and experience with Fuel Cell Modelling
  • Demonstrated passion for the discovery of new measurements for data
  • Proven ability to lead and set direction for a team
  • Proven analytical, structured problem solving and data driven analysis skills
  • Ability to interpret test data and compare against design objectives
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills

  • Strong presentation skills
  • Experience with MATLAB and Excel
  • Profession Engineering eligibility or certification
