The Ballard Technology & Product Development team is seeking to add a Senior Injection Molding Engineer to their growing team in Burnaby, BC. The Sr. Injection Molding Engineer will be the designated subject matter expert responsible for providing support with the development of injection molded parts. This includes, but is not limited to, material selection, finding appropriate suppliers, design for injection molding (CAD modelling), moldflow analysis, working with and visiting vendors, designing inspection jigs and interpreting data from IQC.


Design (50%)
  • Responsible for the design, release and validation of injection molded parts
  • Develop inspection jigs, measure parts or review inspection data

Consultation (50%)
  • Consult and provide mentoring on projects and to staff on injection molded parts to decrease design time and decrease Non-Compliance Reports across the organization
  • Develop and release design guides and standards for injection molded parts
  • Collaborates and drives in problem solving initiatives with suppliers to determine design limits, negotiating specifications etc.
  • Identity and assist in the qualification of suitable fabricators capable of injection molding
  • Collaborates with Materials Engineering to review test data to help identity tests to assess new plastics
  • Works closely with Stack and System Engineering and Design Services to ensure parts are well designed to be injection molded through reviewing CAD models and other design data
  • Collaborate with Cost Engineering to reviewing Stack and System design for opportunities to improve performance or reduce cost
  • Assist in ensuring designs meet VDA/ IATF standards (i.e. DFMEA, PPAP etc.) through drawing checking, training activities etc.
  • Preparing and delivering presentations to Senior Technical leaders
  • Other duties assigned as needed

  • Bachelor's Degree Mechanical Engineering or related degree
  • 5-10 years' experience in injection molded parts design (for the automotive industry preferred) and PPAP, DFMEA, PFMEA processes
  • Experience in a Research and Development, Manufacturing or related environment is desired
  • Proven experience working with suppliers and vendors on tooling, testing, validation and analysis of injection molded parts
  • Able to review 2D/3D CAD design data using basic tools
  • Proficiency with 2D/3D CAD software is desirable
  • Knowledge in Material properties to drive in material selection
  • Ability to interpret results from Moldflow software
  • Strong computer proficiency including MS Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and virtual collaboration tools (Zoom, Teams etc.)
  • Ability to research problems, develop solutions and present possible solutions for implementation (Experience with 8D Problem Solving methods preferred)
  • Proficient understanding of product lifecycle(s) through a PLM including accessing parts/ drawings and releasing items
  • Experience with DFMAS
  • Experience detailing using GD&T standards
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across functions and with external partners
  • Ability to work successfully under pressure of tight timelines and frequent changes to priorities
  • Proven ability working with and developing relationships with vendors and suppliers
