BCIT’s Smart Microgrid Applied Research Team (SMART) is currently seeking a temporary, full-time Software Developer-Research Analyst. This is an intermediate level hands-on technical position, in a fast-paced applied research environment. The successful candidate will join a seasoned, cross-discipline team working the areas of: microgrid and energy management systems (EMS); green transportation and smart electric vehicle charging networks (EVEMS); and critical infrastructure cybersecurity. The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with design and development of full-stack applications in areas including: machine-learning for critical infrastructure cybersecurity; and learning energy management systems (LEMS) for microgrid and electric vehicle charging.


  • Assist with design and build of full-stack software applications, in support of our smart microgrid initiative.
  • Select, implement or apply, and assess machine-learning and optimization algorithms.
  • Assist with algorithm design and develop tools for managing data, and validating models and/or technologies.
  • Develop and document APIs.
  • Benchmark and debug critical issues and participate in software design, production readiness and code reviews.
  • Communicate effective strategies, for example during proposal, technical due diligence, and/or design phases.
  • Research, suggest and incorporate new tools, frameworks, services, or processes.
  • Assist in deploying, monitoring, and troubleshooting production systems.
  • Present on project outcomes.

In addition to the above, preference will be given to candidates who have had an active role and recent experience in the following:

  • Demonstrated experience with machine learning and/or optimization.
  • Demonstrated experience in the real-time data processing and storage of time series data.
  • Demonstrated experience in large data set analysis.
  • Experience with Python, R, Javascript, C/C++, Go, or other relevant programming language.
  • Comfortable working cross-platform including embedded systems.
  • Experience with Google Cloud AI, TensorFlow (or similar ML platform), Docker.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or Software Development.
  • At least 4 years of experience in developing software systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of data structures, coding standards and software engineering best practices.
  • Excellent judgement, decision-making skills, and ability to produce high quality work under deadline pressure.



  • A Bachelor’s Degree or Institute of Technology Diploma in an area suitable for the work to be performed and 4 years relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish applied research projects and provide leadership to project teams.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT:            March 12, 2019 to March 31, 2020

SALARY RANGE:                          $52,761 - $72,386
