Located in northwestern British Columbia, Galore Creek is one of the world's largest undeveloped copper-gold-silver deposits. Reporting to the Director, Technical Services, the Senior Lead, Mine Engineering is primarily accountable for the overall technical analysis, mine basis design, planning, control, and tradeoffs for the Galore Creek project including necessary conceptual and/or scoping studies and a prefeasibility study beginning in 2020.
Located in Vancouver, British Columbia, the successful candidate for this full time, salaried position with benefits would ideally have a start date of early February to early March 2019.
Key Responsibilities
  • Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on the common values on health, safety, environment, and communities shared by the asset owners (Teck and Newmont).
  • Be the principle technical mine lead in developing, managing and overseeing the following mine engineering aspects for the Galore Creek project:
  • Administer programs, systems and practices that result in the safest possible working environment that conforms to BC HSRC, GCMC SP&Ps and other applicable statutes, and places safety as the highest priority. Ensure mining occurs in the most environmentally sound manner
  • Manage mine engineering function including mine design, waste rock management, development of process design criteria, equipment sizing and selection, including mine surface infrastructure
  • Ensure that the technical development program adheres to all GCMC policies and standards as well as GCMC's stage gate process requirements.
  • Oversee the mine planning process inclusive of environmental and social impacts
  • As appropriate, organize and develop preliminary project execution plans for the development of the mine design basis and production schedule
  • Support the development of preliminary capital (AACEI Class 4) and operating costs estimates for the Galore Creek mine design and production schedule
  • Provide input into the overall project and operational business model, along with other disciplines such as geology, geotechnical, metallurgical process engineering, etc. to help ensure optimized mine development plans
  • Detail mine geotechnical parameters, interpretation and modelling requirements
  • Coordinate mine engineering aspects of the Galore Creek project with EPCM firms working as part of the owner's team
  • Manage inputs and assumptions for specific economic analyses related to the required studies
  • Develop and oversee annual budgeting and periodic forecasts for mine engineering
  • Advise from an engineering perspective on strategic objectives and ensure that best practices are incorporated into the mine engineering process
  • Participate as a member of senior technical staff, in decision-making and initiatives site wide
  • Follow appropriate internal accounting controls and take the necessary corrective action to protect the assets of GCMC to enable effective cost, financial and management reporting The above accountabilities are representative of the nature and level of work assigned and are not necessarily all-inclusive.
Key Competencies, Knowledge and Experience
  • BSc. Engineering or equivalent with Mining, Civil or Geotechnical specialization. Equivalent combination of education and open pit engineering experience.
  • Greater than 15 years of solid, progressive experience in major mining and/or mineral processing industry.
  • P. Eng designation is required with 6 to 8 years of progressively senior level experience in a technical environment.
  • Good understanding of mine development and operating best practices including management of health and safety, exploration, resource development and planning, mining and waste management, processing, logistics, and specifically regulatory matters including closure planning
  • Have a high level of technical knowledge related to mineral processing of base metal and precious metal ores. Be well versed in the latest technological innovations in mine design, planning and operations.
  • Have broad experience in mine operations specifically, ideally experience in an operating setting at Mine Supervisor, Superintendent or Chief Mine Engineer level. Ideally, operating experience will include startup and commissioning experience.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written. The ability to write clear and concise reports is particularly important, as well as the ability to present technical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Proven ability to build relationships across multi-disciplinary technical teams and work as an effective team member on projects.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
