Role Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Biodiversity & Conservation, the Senior Lead, Biodiversity supports corporate and site biodiversity-related work. This role is responsible for biodiversity guidance and tool development, training, reporting and governance. The incumbent is responsible for bringing together our internal biodiversity community of practice, arranging for the provision of technical biodiversity expertise when needed, and supporting the implementation of leading practices. Additional key responsibilities include tracking and reporting on Teck's biodiversity performance, including our biodiversity program goals and relevant Environment Standard implementation.

This role leads the development of biodiversity management plans (BMPs) for all Teck sites including the formulation of loss/gain accounting and risk planning and prioritization, and closely collaborates with sites to deliver a high standard on BMP engagement, implementation and monitoring. The role is responsible for working with sites to assemble technical teams of local subject matter experts as required.

The role directly supervises a team of two data analysts as well as supervising and directing consulting roles as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Develop site-level specialized teams consisting of academics, consultants, Teck personnel and others as required to develop, execute and review/monitor site biodiversity management plans.
  • Develop biodiversity-related guidance and tools to support sites in all phases of mine life.
  • Lead biodiversity education, risk assessment and decision-making facilitation, lessons learned processes, change management and internal standards conformance for all Teck sites.
  • Conduct reviews of BMP implementation and monitoring and report on progress and gaps.
  • Manage internal and external reporting related to biodiversity.
  • Lead Teck's biodiversity community of practice by sharing leading practices across the organization and promoting participation and engagement across the company.
  • Represent Teck externally on biodiversity-related local, national and international groups.

Qualifications

  • Science, Engineering or other university degree in natural resources- or environmental-related field.
  • Professional accreditation, such as RPF, PBio, PAg, or registered, or eligible for registration, as a P.Eng or PGeo with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia, is an asset.
  • Strong experience with biodiversity or closure planning, project management and community engagement; demonstrated success in working with diverse teams.
  • Eight plus years of experience in mining and/or industrial or natural resource operations or biodiversity project management is ideal, with preference given to candidates with experience in biodiversity planning and execution including community engagement.
  • Technical knowledge of relevant legislation, standards, and effective best management practices.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making abilities with a proven capacity in practical problem solving.
  • Ability to work productively with nominal supervision and work independently.
  • Proven and exemplary skills in leading a team directly and through influence.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both formal and informal settings, including technical writing, data analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is an asset.

Pay Range: CAD $119,000 - $147,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
