Ballard has a regular full-time position available for a Senior or Principal Research Scientist/Engineer at our Burnaby location. The successful candidate will be instrumental in the success of Ballard's business with the primary responsibility to lead activities related to the Next Generation MEA research project. The project objectives are to maintain/secure Ballard's MEA technology world-leading position with early demonstration and proof-of-concept of emerging MEA components and materials, innovative MEA concepts, cost reduced materials and advanced manufacturing methods.

The successful candidate will have significant knowledge of MEA performance and transport phenomena, durability fundamentals, in depth knowledge of MEA test methods and ASTs, thorough understanding of PEM fuel cells life-limiting failure modes and will have experience in the design of MEAs and its components. They will work closely with Ballard's Research team of materials experts and contribute their own expertise to translate MEA requirements to subcomponent design requirements. Experience in catalyst and catalyst layer design an asset.

Responsibilities:
  • Be a leader in the demonstration of excellence in MEA design, engineering and research through - plan, lead, and execute the Next Generation MEA research project, supporting technology demonstrations in line with Ballard's product roadmap requirements
  • Assess compliance of MEA designs against requirements. This may include: designing test plans and new test methods as required, reviewing/analyzing test data, building models, and/or using existing Ballard models, to perform performance and lifetime analyses of MEAs as a function of operating conditions and fuel cell duty cycle
  • Supervise and mentor a small team of engineers and scientists (3-5 full time equivalent), and work with the rest of Ballard's team of experts to meet the objectives of the project
  • Work with the Membrane & Electrodes Teams to define requirements and integrate subcomponents into the MEA to meet product or customer requirements through stack demonstrations
  • Contribute to the fundamental understanding of advanced fuel cell catalyst technology
  • Support and interact with other research, product development, processing, and commercial teams as required
  • Coordinate the pursuit of funding opportunities to support external collaboration and supplement internal research efforts
  • Act as a resource for resolution of unique or complex business problems
  • Lead or conduct complex projects involving multiple disciplines or business units
  • Act as a role model for the Ballard cultural values


Requirements:
  • Degree in relevant Engineering field, Electrochemistry, or Physical Chemistry
  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience is an asset
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant fuel cell experience in a global research or technology development environment
  • Excellent technical capabilities with an in-depth knowledge of PEM Fuel Cell technology fundamentals
  • Experience in the area of PEM fuel cell catalyst research an asset
  • Proven track record of leading research activities delivering enhanced fundamental understanding, effective research tools, intellectual property
  • Broad understanding of fuel cell product applications and requirements, familiarity with product development processes, and the proven ability to identify, develop, and integrate technology improvements into product.
