Optix is a digital platform for coworking spaces and smart offices. With clients in over 20 countries, Optix enables commercial real estate players, from coworking spaces to large enterprise organizations, to transform their workplace. In joining our team at this stage, you would play a critical role in taking our technology from a PHP/JS system to a scalable API-centric platform. We are looking for someone with front and back-end knowledge and experience in API design and development. You would play a critical role in the development of our platform, helping the team to plan and code across our technology stack.

The Optix office is located at 200B 375 Water Street, Vancouver, BC V6B 5C6, next to Waterfront Station.

Please note, we are accepting applicants that are interested in working part-time or flexible hours as well as full-time with regular hours.

Who you are

  • You have 5+ years of experience (front and back-end experience)
  • You're comfortable jumping between the frontend and backend
  • You're able to clearly articulate your knowledge and reasoning to technical and non-technical team members
  • You question the status quo, take ownership of your work, and proactively identify and address issues and opportunities
  • You insist on using great tools — you’re excited to work in an open environment where you and your colleagues embrace change and new resources in order to achieve the ultimate goal
  • You understand the value of testing and automation across an application

What you'll do

  • Play a critical role on our team, working closely with our team of designers and developers, to help take our technology from a PHP/JS system to a scalable API-centric platform
  • Bring an informed and evolving perspective to the development of our platform, helping shape the direction of our technology and the impact we have on our customers
  • Be encouraged to learn and grow as a developer while bringing a curious and ambitious perspective to your work
  • Contribute technical expertise to all aspects of our software development process, from planning, architecture, through to testing, deployment and maintenance
  • Document APIs and software you help build
  • Write clean, modular, robust code to implement the desired requirements
  • Identify and prototype best practices for front-end and back-end engineering

What we are looking for in a successful candidate

  • Enterprise software experience or experience with enterprise-grade software
  • Expert knowledge of PHP7/OOP, MySQL-databases and data modeling
  • Management of hosting environment, including database administration and scaling an application to support load changes.
  • Linux administration know-how
  • Proficient understanding of code versioning tools (Git)
  • Familiarity with OAuth 2.0 protocol
  • Experience integrating 3rd party web APIs
  • Apache configuration basics
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services and Docker
  • Experienced with Devops – AWS deployments, continuous integration, and continuous delivery
  • You’ve worked with 3rd party libraries, open source projects, and API’s in the past and you understand the benefits and consequences of what they provide
  • Experience building SPA using reactive frameworks, like React, Vue or Angular

Bonus points for

  • You have worked on or build apps for a platform that enables 3rd parties to develop apps using APIs
  • Test Driven Development and continuous integration experience
  • Ability to implement automated testing platforms and unit tests
  • Basic Bash shell scripting knowledge
  • Experience with Apache
  • Experience with Atlassian tools (BitBucket, Jira, Confluence)
  • Experience with technical leadership and a passion for developing teams that thrive together, with a commitment of teaching and being a part of individual development
  • Experience with bringing legacy into the future and helping us modernize our technology
  • Understanding of the Agile process
  • Experience dealing with backwards compatibility for mobile app APIs
  • You test and automate your code using testing frameworks like Behat, Codeception and Selenium
