Position Summary
The Opportunity

We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Nurse Practitioner to join our collaborative team in Fort St. James. This full-time position offers the opportunity to provide comprehensive primary care services to patients of all ages, with a focus on longitudinal care and opioid agonist therapy (OAT). The NP will work closely with family physicians, patient care assistants, and an integrated professional team to deliver high-quality, culturally safe care.

Key Responsibilities

Provide longitudinal primary care to a diverse patient population.
Deliver opioid agonist therapy as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
Collaborate with family physicians and other health professionals in a collegial and supportive environment.
Participate in rotational outreach travel (1-2 days/month) to the communities of Nak'azdli and Tl'azt'en.
Use Electronic Medical Records (EMR) for documentation and care coordination.
Attach patients per the Provincial Attachment System (PAS) guidelines
Utilize a fleet vehicle for travel to outreach communities (e.g., Tl'azt'en is approximately a 1-hour drive).

Qualifications & Skills

Eligible for registration with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a Nurse Practitioner.
Demonstrated experience in primary care and opioid agonist therapy.
Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Commitment to culturally safe and trauma-informed care.

About the Community

Fort St. James is a historic and welcoming community located on the southeastern shore of Stuart Lake in north-central British Columbia. Known for its rich Indigenous heritage and natural beauty, the area offers abundant outdoor recreation including hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and water sports. The town is adjacent to the Nak'azdli Whut'en First Nation and is home to a diverse population that values community connection and cultural respect. With a population of approximately 1,400, Fort St. James provides a peaceful lifestyle with access to essential services and a strong sense of local pride.

About the Hospital

Opened in January 2025, the Nats'oojeh Hospital and Health Centre is a modern, culturally safe facility designed in collaboration with local Dakelh First Nations. The name Nats'oojeh, meaning "everyone healing" in Dakelh, reflects the hospital's commitment to holistic care, community wellness, and cultural respect.

The facility is more than three times the size of the previous hospital and includes:

27 beds (18 long-term care, 9 acute care)
Expanded emergency department with trauma and ambulance bays
Larger laboratory and diagnostic imaging spaces
Dedicated spiritual and healing spaces, including areas for smudging and traditional medicine

The hospital serves Fort St. James and surrounding Indigenous communities, offering a strong foundation for health and healing

Salary Range

New Graduate NP - $145,739
1 Year Experience - $153,026
2 Years Experience - $160,313

Qualfications
Education and Experience
-Completion of BCCNM approved Master's degree level nurse practitioner program.
-Eligible for registration as a Nurse Practitioner with British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
-Ability to communicate and collaborate with patients/clients/residents and families about health findings, diagnosis, treatment, self-care and prognosis.
-Ability to collaborate, consult with and formally refer patients/clients/residents to physicians and other health professionals when appropriate.
-Ability to critically assess and evaluate health research literature to determine best practices; ability to introduce education and evidence-based research.
-Ability to assess and recognize population health trends; ability to plan and implement strategies for population-based prevention and health promotion.
-Ability to implement and evaluate planned change.
-Ability to supervise others and evaluate the care they deliver.
-Ability to lead a team and work within a team.
-Ability to self-direct, interact, and adapt effectively with other professionals in complex, dynamic situations.
-Ability to transfer knowledge, teach, coach and mentor others.
-Ability to identify and respond appropriately to legal and ethical issues that may arise in patient/resident/client care.
-Ability to self-assess performance and assume responsibility and accountability for own professional development, educational or consultative assistance when appropriate.
