About Highland Valley Copper

Highland Valley Copper (HVC) Operationsis Canada's largest open-pit copper mine and molybdenum operation. HVC produces both copper and molybdenum concentrate through autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding and flotation.

Located approximately 17 kilometers west of Logan Lake and about 50 kilometers southwest of Kamloops in British Columbia, the surrounding areas of HVC have an abundant offering of outdoor experiences.

The Health, Safety & Risk Manager is a senior leadership role responsible for setting the strategic direction and overseeing the implementation of health, safety, and risk management systems at Highland Valley Copper.

This role plays a critical part in enabling safe, sustainable, and efficient operations by ensuring robust risk identification, mitigation, and continuous improvement practices across all operational areas. The HS&R Manager leads the development of standards, systems, and culture that support proactive risk management and regulatory compliance, while driving integration across site functions.

This position is accountable for embedding a high-performance safety culture and ensuring alignment with Teck's commitments to people, safety, and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership
  • Develop and execute the site-wide health, safety, and risk management vision, strategy, and long-term plan
  • Align HS&R programs with Teck's corporate standards and HVC operational goals
  • Lead prioritization of risk mitigation and continuous improvement initiatives based on data-driven insights

Operational Excellence
  • Oversee implementation of health, safety, and risk management systems and standards
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal reporting frameworks
  • Monitor and improve effectiveness of safety programs, risk management processes, and field practices
  • Ensure contractor safety programs and expectations are clearly defined and adhered to

Coaching & Culture
  • Coach and support operational leaders to strengthen risk awareness and safety practices
  • Drive a culture of proactive risk identification and ownership across all teams
  • Promote safe work systems aligned with industry best practices
  • Reinforce that effective risk management goes beyond compliance

Stakeholder Engagement
  • Collaborate with site leadership, union representatives, and cross-functional teams
  • Engage with regulatory agencies and external stakeholders on safety and risk matters
  • Partner with departments including Operations, Maintenance, Asset Management, Sustainability, HR, and Finance to drive shared outcomes

Governance & Systems
  • Maintain and continuously improve HS&R standards, procedures, and reporting systems
  • Ensure integrity of safety data collection, reporting, and analysis
  • Support emergency response planning and occupational health programs
  • Lead implementation of Management Operating System (MOS) standards across safety processes

Qualifications

  • University Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Science or Environmental Discipline, or a multi-year technical diploma in the field of Occupational Health and Safety. Experience will be considered as a replacement.
  • Minimum 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in health, safety, and risk management within heavy industry (mining preferred)
  • Proven experience leading large, cross-functional teams and influencing senior stakeholders
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • risk management and critical controls processes.
    • experience in process safety risk management.
    • experience in development and execution of health and safety management systems.
    • proven practical experience in complex process systems.
    • experience in occupational health and hygiene programs.
    • experience in emergency management and response.
  • Ability to collaborate with external and internal regulatory bodies.
  • Ability to lead with influence and direct a work team including direct reports and peers.
  • Collaborative approach to problem solving and completing tasks.
  • Strong written, oral and presentation skills.
  • Project planning and project management skills.
  • Excellent organization skills and ability to set and achieve objectives.

Pay Range: CAD $160,000 - $198,000 per year

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.

Working Conditions:
  • Location: Highland Valley Copper is a 50-minute drive from Kamloops, which has all of the comforts of city living and is also close to Merritt, Ashcroft, and Logan Lake, which all exude a small town community atmosphere.
  • Access: This is a drive-in/drive-out role. Most employees commute to site by car, and carpooling is common among team members.
