Diagnostics Technology Manager

General Fusion is transforming how the world is energized by developing the first commercially viable fusion power plant. Fusion will deliver clean, safe, and on-demand power at industrial scale, providing a powerful complement to renewables and a pathway to a zero-emissions grid.

Combining new technologies, proven industrial processes, and advances in fundamental fusion science, General Fusion aims to be the first in the world to develop commercial fusion power. Key performance requirements have been demonstrated at the system level, setting the stage for building a pre-commercial fusion power prototype.

Position overview

Diagnostics are an important technology to assist in the development of Fusion devices. Often complex physics needs to be understood in order to extract information from a fusion chamber.  This physics must be captured in a reliable robust device along with analytical algorithms and software to convert the signal into a physically meaningful parameter. A leader is needed who can manage a team of world class physicists and engineers to develop these measurement technologies and deploy them across all General Fusions Projects.  Each of these specialists is responsible for the execution of specific projects.   This manager will build the capabilities of the team to ensure that they have the necessary technical and operational skills to quickly and effectively engineer useful measurements systems. In addition, this manager will maintain a technology roadmap that ensure the long term competitiveness of General Fusion’s diagnostic technology.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage and develop a team of physicists and engineers
• Leverage capabilities at external laboratories and successfully influence development programs to align with our diagnostics  technology needs
• Mentor and coach team in Collaboration Project Management, and Technology Development best practices.
• Ensure that General Fusion diagnostics technology supports of the overall technology advancement program
• Continually improve the technology roadmaps by monitoring external developments, fostering long term relationships with academic and supply chain partners.
• Co- Manage a portfolio of emerging technology projects with the Program Management Department
• Work with Director to ensure adequate resourcing to support the needed plans

Requirements

• Post graduate Degree in Engineering in a multidisciplinary field (Mechatronics, Engineering Physics, Systems Engineering, Aerospace engineering or similar.
• > 15 years of experience in design and validation of complex technological systems.
• At least 5 years of work in a commercial setting with engineering deliverables and new technology development
• Proven team leadership for teams including both technical guidance of a team people growth and motivation
• Knowledge of the physics described in Maxwells Equations, optics, electronics, data processing, mechanics, and thermodynamics.
