Role Overview

Provides assistance to the technical staff within a lab in the setup, testing and take down of a variety of material and equipment.


  • Performs the setup of and assists in the testing and examination of specific items within a laboratory by investigating, recording measurements, operating specialized test instruments, determining parameters, locating failure points, troubleshooting, identifying and reporting causes of test equipment malfunctions and preparing related reports.
  • Provides data to technologists for inclusion in technical reports.
  • Operates a variety of heavy equipment such as forklifts, platforms and lifting devices.
  • Provides janitorial and clean up service for the lab.
  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job.


  • Basic working knowledge of how to prepare tests for a variety of equipment, material and components.
  • Basic knowledge of the applicable laboratory analysis procedures, testing standards and quality assurance principles.
  • Basic knowledge of how to calibrate and troubleshoot the related instrumentation.
  • Basic knowledge of related testing standards and procedures.
  • Ability to operate a forklift, manlift and large platform.
  • Ability to operate photographic and video equipment.
  • Good written and verbal communications skills.
  • Basic report writing skills.
  • Basic knowledge of related safety and WHMIS regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office applications.

Experience, Training and Education

Completion of a Certificate of Technology in Electrical or related discipline from an Institute of Technology. Up to 1 year of related experience working in a lab setting up and performing tests on a variety of equipment, materials and components would be an asset.

Working Conditions
Regular exposure to working at heights on top of equipment and some exposure to weather. May be performing a variety of tests in which explosions are required. Majority of day on feet.

Additional Information

  • These vacancies are for the Electrical Labs: High Voltage Lab, High Power Lab, High Current Lab, Grid Modernization Lab or Asset Management Inspections
  • Certificate in electrical technology required and preferably focused on power equipment operation and maintenance
  • Frequently working around high energy electrical power sources at up to 50 kV (and/or 20 kA) and occasionally at higher voltages >100 kV.
  • This is a hands on role and requires recent experience doing hands on technical work
  • Must be able to work in confined space
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work at heights > 10 feet
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license
  • Must be able to perform all physical requirements of the role
  • In addition to the above; roles in Asset Management Inspections could involve frequent travel; this role could involve work in the lab (20%) and in the field (80%) testing high voltage electrical equipment; frequent traveling across various locations in BC during summer time for maximum two weeks at a time is required.
