The Detectors Group at TRIUMF plays a crucial role in the field of particle and nuclear physics. They specialize in designing, developing, manufacturing, and assembling detector systems for both local and global projects. Currently, we are seeking a highly skilled Journeyperson Machinist to join our team.

As a valued member of the Detector Support Facility, the Certified Journeyperson Machinist will assume a pivotal role in providing machining services and technical support to the Detectors Group and other significant TRIUMF projects. Moreover, this position will involve spearheading the development of innovative manufacturing processes and techniques to propel detector technology advancements.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Programming, operating and safe maintenance of CNC lathe & CNC vertical machining center.
  • Machining of plastics, ceramics, and metals.
  • Manufacture, align, glue, wrap, and assemble scintillator parts and components.
  • Providing consultation relating to parts fabrication and ease of manufacturing to scientists and engineers.
  • Provide technical support to detector assembly.
  • Liaise with other machinists and outside shops on techniques, and processes relating to TRIUMF’s requirements.
  • Procurement and inventorying of materials and tools.
  • General shop clean-up, housekeeping, and safe operation of powered equipment.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: 

  • Demonstrated expertise in machining.
  • Extensive experience in CNC Lathe and CNC Vertical Mill, fluent with CAD/CAM programs with a preference for MasterCAM and SolidWorks.
  • Ability to work to tight tolerances including quality control and precision measurement.
  • Proficiency with CAD programs with a preference for SolidWorks.
  • Proficiency with general shop equipment such as bandsaw, belt-sander, drill press, etc.
  • Experience in handling and assembly of fragile components.
  • Basic knowledge in the production and assembly of sensitive electronic and mechanical devices.
  • Good interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills including word processor and spreadsheet software.
  • The ability to work effectively as a team member.
  • The ability to work with changing requirements and balancing priorities.
  • Knowledge and experience with machining various ceramics with PCD tools is an asset.
  • Research and development experience is an asset.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Trades certification as a Machinist, and a minimum of 4 years of journeyperson experience.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).
