There are currently two permanent positions available.
An eligibility list may be established for future temporary and/or permanent opportunities.

These positions can only be performed from any location within the province of British Columbia where there is sufficient cellular coverage and stable high speed internet coverage for video conferencing. The successful applicant may remain at their current home location in BC and enter into a remote agreement OR work from a ministry location where office space is available. These positions may be performed in other approved locations within the Province of BC. The BC Data Service division (BCDS) is responsible for developing statistics about B.C. and provides technical tools and services to maximize data's use and value for government and the broader public sector - while working closely with partners and clients to ensure that data is used in ways that support better government. BCDS is responsible for implementing BC's Anti-racism Data Act and is committed to advancing Indigenous data sovereignty.

Specifically, the division delivers several public and ministry-facing programs that support modernization of government, including: DataBC, Data Innovation Program, Data Science Partnership, and BC Stats, the province's central statistical agency

The Data Systems and Services branch within BCDS is a central service provider and systems manager for data discovery and sharing, data warehousing and publication, API discovery and management, data acquisition, analysis and visualization, digital map, and location services delivery. These systems support a wide range of internal and external clients with critical data replication and access, metadata and governance, data acquisition and analysis, physical address geocoding and routing, API mediation, official place name sharing, geographic bookmarking, and digital map and imagery services delivery.

To deliver these diverse services that support everything from public safety alerting to electronic prescribing, the branch integrates a combination of COTS (commercial off the shelf software), SAAS (software as a service), and FOSS (free and open-source software). To host software the branch employs a wide range of technical infrastructure ranging from physical Linux and Windows servers to Kubernetes clusters on private and public cloud.

As a member of an Agile team, and a contributor to our DevOps Chapter you will help the team to plan and execute the design, development and implementation of solutions that meet client requirements. Provide technical expertise to support application and technology solutions and develop the configuration and installation management plans and scripts for new systems. You will also plan, monitor, and test systems to ensure reliability and recovery objectives are met.

Job Requirements:
In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

  • Degree, diploma or certificate in Computer Science or related discipline; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience in investigating and implementing complex IT integration challenges.
  • Experience troubleshooting, testing, implementing software and hardware solutions.
  • Experience with version control for code management.

Preference may be given to applicants for:
  • Experience participating in project teams that include application developers, business area users and technical resources.
  • Experience and/or training using more than two programming languages, including but not restricted to: Bash, PowerShell, Perl, Ruby, Rust, JavaScript, PHP, Python, Java, Go, .NET.
  • Experience and/or training using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications and spatial data formats and management.
  • Experience and/or training with integrating geospatial software solutions such as: Geoserver, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, PostGIS, Oracle Locator / Spatial, Feature Manipulation Engine (FME).
  • Experience and/or training using configuration management/automation tools such as: Terraform, Ansible, Chef, Puppet.
  • Experience and/or training in IT architecture design and documentation.
  • Experience and/or training configuring and troubleshooting computer networks.
  • Experience and/or training with container-based deployment or deployment (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with agile methodologies.
  • Experience and/or training analyzing system or application logs to troubleshoot issues.
  • Experience and/or training developing automated testing of applications and services.
