The Opportunity:

At WSP, we're continuing to grow and develop our expertise in Earth and Environment, operating as a trusted advisor and technical expert on engineering design challenges for our clients across multiple industries. Our team is growing, and as a result we're adding an Intermediate Coastal Engineer to our group. As part of the Ports, Coastal and Surface Water team in British Columbia, you'll be responsible for driving forward our ambitious plans to enhance our Environmental service offering in the province through your work with a close-knit team of engineering specialists, professionals, and technical staff.
As an Intermediate Coastal Engineer, you will be expected to step into a technical specialist role for coastal engineering projects in BC, across Canada and internationally. You will join a growing team based in Vancouver, Victoria, Calgary, and Mississauga that services projects in Oil & Gas, Mining, Transportation, Renewable Energy, and Government sectors.

A day in the life:

• Implementing state-of-the-art coastal engineering methods independently to address problems related to natural coastal hazards (e.g. flooding, erosion and sedimentation), human activity (e.g. spills and dispersion, coastal structures, ship motions, environmental loads on marine structures, dredging and management of dredgeate), and the effects of climate change and variability;
• Supervising and conducting field work involving site visits and data collection in coastal and offshore environments (regional and international travel may be required). This may include the deployment of oceanographic instruments, site reconnaissance, and condition inspection of coastal and harbour structures;
• Conducting coastal engineering calculations and analyses in support of planning and design of coastal protection structures, port and harbour facilities, and for coastal hazard studies;
• Assisting with coordination and management of projects or project related tasks including field work, data analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of marine and coastal processes (e.g. winds, waves, currents, water levels, sediment transport);
• Preparation of technical documents (e.g. reports, drawings, specifications) describing engineering and environmental investigations, results, and analyses;
• Assisting in the preparation of proposals and workplans;
• Engaging and interacting with other members of a multi-disciplinary team You will always ensure health and safety policies are followed at all sites and take WSP's Life Saving rules to heart.

We'd love to hear from you if you have ...

• University degree (preferably Master's or Ph.D. with a specialisation in coastal, port or ocean engineering);
• Registration as a Professional Engineer in British Columbia as a Civil or eligibility of obtaining registration in BC by transferring from another province in Canada - Alternatively, p roven eligibility for Registration in BC as a Professional Engineer within one year;
• 5+ years of work experience - preferably in a consulting environment - in the field of coastal, port or ocean engineering, environmental assessments, coastal engineering design and hazard assessment;
• Working knowledge of meteorology/oceanography fundamentals and coastal geomorphology;
• Proven ability to conduct independent analysis, develop visualisations, and interpret complex physical processes by analyzing geospatial time series data;
• Proven experience in engineering calculations and analyses in support of coastal engineering design;
• Ability to develop and apply numerical models (e.g., Delft3D, DHI MIKE suite, SWAN, XBeach, UNIBEST-CL+, Optimoor, Ansys-AQWA, OrcaFlex, OpenFOAM, FLOW-3D) for the simulation of waves, currents, sediment transport and morphology; change, wave-structure interaction, and moored vessel dynamics in open coast, inlet, and estuarine environments;
• Proficiency in writing programs for data analysis and visualisation using tools such as Matlab, Python, R, Excel-VBA, Fortran 95 will be an asset;
• Knowledge of oceanographic and meteorological instrumentation (experience with surveying, operating boats will be an asset);
• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and demonstrated teamwork skills.
