Purpose

Reporting to the Director, Facilities Management & Capital Planning, the Infrastructure Manager & Chief Engineer provides oversight of the Power Plant, the Bioenergy Plant, all building HVAC, and all related infrastructure. The Chief’s primary role is to provide certified supervision of the Shift Engineer crew and equipment to ensure Technical Safety BC legislative requirements are met and that the plants are run in a safe and efficient manner. This is a senior position in the Facilities Department.


Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Identifying strategic priorities for the Power and Bioenergy Plants, establishing and implementing short and long term organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, programs, and services;
  • Directing the day to day operations and supervising staff in the operation of the boilers, machinery and equipment connected to the Power Plant;
  • Managing a crew of 6 – 8 employees, including hiring, supervising, orientating, and evaluating new and current Shift Engineers on expectations and responsibilities;
  • Planning and budgeting annual system maintenance and scheduling of preventative maintenance activities;
  • Resolving day to day employee relations issues, providing input to the University regarding collective bargaining issues, and making and carrying out disciplinary action, when necessary;
  • Ensuring safety and operational policies and procedures are up-to-date;
  • Managing the daily, cyclical and preventative maintenance of all plant equipment, water and sewer infrastructure, and elevator systems;
  • Liaising with Energy Management staff to ensure University goals and objectives are met;
  • Formulating and developing shift engineers’ professional development activities, including mentoring and identifying other professional development opportunities.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess a valid BC or Inter-Provincial 3rd Class Power Engineering Certificate, together with a minimum of 7 years related experience, preferably in a commercial/institutional environment.

Previous supervisory experience is required. You must have extensive knowledge of computerized building control and energy management systems, and proficiency in water treatment/testing, controls and HVAC systems. You have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the demonstrated ability to work in a service-oriented team environment demonstrating flexibility in an ever-changing setting. You must be able to obtain and provide the results of a clear Criminal Record Check prior to appointment.

An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.


Salary

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.

Normal hours of work will be 8:00am – 4:00pm Monday through Friday.
