POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the HR Senior Manager, the incumbent will contribute to the success of the Health & Safety (H&S) function as well as provide support to the HR department. The H&S Specialist will support activities designed to provide a safe and compliant facility through the creation, implementation and overview of the H&S Program. The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative HR team who supports NBI-CA’s managers and employees by building trust and providing timely advice and support.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure the company is following applicable H&S requirements from agencies which include WorkSafeBC, WCA, OHSR, and Public Health Agency of Canada 
  • Influence and encourage the adoption of safe work practices and procedures and drive the company safety culture
  • Work collaboratively with departments to identify/assess risks, promote compliance and responsible behaviors as required by company policies, relevant H&S standards, codes, regulations and best practices
  • Develop and revise H&S related SOPs, policies, practices and procedures 
  • Develop, conduct, and/or source H&S related training which include H&S orientation, COVID-19 briefing, JHSC training, Respectful Workplace policy training, etc.. 
  • Participate/lead incident investigations, recommend corrective actions, and submit all relevant WorkSafeBC reports in a timely manner 
  • Manage and update all H&S documentation and programs 
  • Perform relevant data analysis to determine the effectiveness of current practices and make recommendations for continuous improvement
  • Act as a key contact for external parties regarding claims, audits, compliance requirements 
  • Assist with the coordination and implementation of company emergency response plans
  • Collect and analyze safety data including training, WorkSafeBC statistics, workplace incidents, etc.
  • Stay current with development and changes regarding COVID-19. Update safety measures, policies and procedures as necessary
  • Lead and participate in H&S related meetings 
  • Develop and conduct the H&S audit program
  • Perform other duties as required. 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • A diploma, certificate or degree in Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S), Industrial Hygiene or Industrial Sciences
  • Minimum 3 years of OH&S experience
  • Knowledge of the Worker’s Compensation Act, WorkSafeBC OH&S Regulations and Claims Management
  • Experience developing and implementing H&S policies, procedures and practices
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build strong relationships with all levels across the organization
  • Energetic, self-motivated and presents H&S in a positive and practical manner
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Biosafety Standards is an asset
  • Proficiency with MS Office Applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Valid OFA Level 1.  Possession of a valid OFA Level 2 is an asset.
