Overview of the Opportunity:

At WSP our Geotechnical and Materials Testing Team are providing geotechnical investigations, laboratory testing and field construction services to position WSP as a leader in the market. We're looking for an Intermediate Geotechnical / Materials Engineering Technologist to join the Environment team and to be located at our Kelowna office in beautiful British Columbia. Reporting to the Geotechnical group manager, you will be working with a team of specialists to conduct geotechnical investigations, assist in preparing proposals and reports, and conduct geotechnical construction reviews, overseeing the materials testing (soils and concrete) laboratory and providing materials testing services for land development and municipal infrastructure projects throughout the Southern Interior and BC area.

What you can expect to do here:

• You will be conducting field review of ongoing construction related to geotechnical activities;
• You will be performing subgrade inspections, assess material on-site and provide feedback to project managers;
• You will also perform foundation, shoring, and ground improvement reviews in the field;
• You will be conducting field investigations by test pitting and drilling to log soil and groundwater conditions;
• You will be involved in management of field data, testing sheets, drawing markups, and geotechnical testing reports;
• You will oversee the geotechnical/materials testing laboratory including performing the testing when required which includes lab concrete testing, proctor and sieve tests, moisture content of soil, Atterberg limits, consolidation, swell and CBR testing, and execution of compaction and field concrete testing as per drawings and specification;
• You will work with and provide support to other members of the geotechnical group in BC in assisting with other field, lab, and office activities as required;
• You will assist in preparation of proposals and geotechnical engineering reports; and
• You will always ensure health and safety policies are followed at all sites and take WSP's Life Saving rules to heart.

What you'll bring to WSP:

• Civil Engineering Technology diploma, preferably with a focus on Geotechnical Engineering;
• Registration as an AScT, PTech, or a GradTech with eligibility for registration as an AScT with ASTTBC;
• 5+ years field experience of field investigations, soils testing, subgrade evaluation, knowledge of concrete and asphalt testing an asset;
• Previous experience working as a geotechnical technologist;
• Knowledge of drilling (auger, sonic, etc.) and test pitting procedures;
• Must be mobile and willing to work on a combination of field and office work, as travel will be required;
• Must have a vehicle that can transport samples, concrete testing equipment, and nuclear densometer;
• Excellent computer skills, proficiency with common industry software is required (Word, Excel, gINT);
• Proficiency in ACAD is considered an asset;
• Desire to collaborate with a diverse team of engineers, technologists, and technicians on a broad range of geotechnical and materials testing projects;
• Be flexible, well organized, interested in technical and personal advancement within the geotechnical engineering field, and able to carry out assignments with minimal supervision and a good attitude;
• Ability to start work early and work late as per project demands;
• Ability to work out of town (as needed) and work weekends if required; and
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
