About the OpportunityThe City of Fort St. John is looking for a full-time Facilities Maintenance Engineer to join our team in Fort St. John, British Columbia.
In this role, you will report to the Facilities Manager and be responsible for overseeing the preparation, maintenance, and repair of ice surfaces, equipment, and ice plants in accordance with all applicable standards. You will also manage the building systems and coordinate various projects within the municipal recreational facilities to ensure users enjoy a safe and high-quality experience. As the designated Chief Engineer for the municipality’s ammonia and freon refrigeration plants, you’ll need to work varied and flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to support major ice events and perform on-call duties.
Your primary responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Leading the safe operation and maintenance of ammonia and freon refrigeration plants as the designated chief engineer
- Ensuring compliance with relevant safety standards and regulations, including WorkSafe BC and Technical Safety BC requirements
- Coordinating and supervising staff responsible for ice maintenance, building repairs, and custodial care
- Creating and implementing procedures for ice surface preparation, installation, and removal
- Planning and evaluating preventative maintenance projects for recreational facilities and equipment
- Assisting in the training, development, and evaluation of staff and contractors in the safe operation of facility systems
- Scheduling and performing routine maintenance on HVAC systems and digital controls
- Responding independently to emergency calls and equipment issues
- Managing budgets, monitoring expenditures, and ensuring compliance with purchasing policies
- Coordinating with inspectors, suppliers, and contractors on equipment repairs and upgrades
- Preparing reports, logbooks, and inspections for plant and equipment operations
- Fostering a safe and positive working environment by adhering to all safety regulations and promoting a respectful workplace
To qualify, you will need a 4th Class Power Engineer Certification and a minimum 3rd Year Millwright Apprenticeship, or experience as a Refrigeration Mechanic with a Refrigeration Operators Certificate. Additionally, you must have project management experience and a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:
- WCB First Aid Level I certification
- Management Skills for Supervisors Certificate or equivalent supervisor certification
- Transportation of Dangerous Goods Certification
- Experience operating an ammonia refrigeration plant
- Considerable knowledge of building systems, HVAC, digital control systems, and ice maintenance
- Experience with chlorine, freon, and ammonia refrigeration plants, and remote monitoring systems
- Strong project management and planning skills related to recreation facilities operations
- Proficiency in using office software such as Microsoft Office, iCompass, and CityWorks
- Experience in training, supervising, and developing staff within a team environment
