Powertech has an exciting and challenging opportunity for an Environmental Technical Specialist 1.

 

Role Overview

Provides technical support to staff; plans and undertakes a variety of field and office investigations using prescribed methodologies and prepares routine technical reports associated with construction, operations, maintenance and waste management / pollution prevention activities

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties

  • Under direction of more senior staff, plans, organizes and undertakes a variety of technical field and office investigations related to construction, operations, maintenance and waste management/ pollution prevention; conducts field reviews and inspections, gathers data and information, recommends study approach and provides input into the identification of methodologies required to deal with the associated environmental issues
  • Researches, assesses and documents background data on environmental issues and problems for use in the assessment of a variety of sites
  • Participates in the development and administration of various programs related to the environmental components of BC Hydro's operations
  • Discusses hazardous or other waste storage facility procedures and practises, licensing and other environmental requirements with Hydro and regulatory agency staff, other environmental technical specialists, etc.; participates in public consultation programs and meetings and/or training or presentation sessions, as required; provides training in waste management methods and a variety of other environmental management techniques
  • Participates in environmental reviews of operating activities and facilities to identify potential environmental impacts and required mitigation methods; follows up to observe if approved work is carried out in accordance with all pertinent environmental legislation/regulations and Hydro's best management practices
  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required

  • Good working knowledge waste and environmentally hazardous material handling, storage and disposal methods
  • Good working knowledge of provincial and federal environmental management legislation and regulations
  • Basic knowledge of safety issues related to field work
  • Basic knowledge of Hydro's operations and their effects on natural resources
  • Good research and analytical skills
  • Ability to read and prepare technical reports
  • Ability to determine the best methods of gathering data/information in the field
  • Ability to lead others in field work
  • Good computer spreadsheet and database application skills
  • Possess a valid BC driver's license

 

Experience, Training and Education

  • Completion of a Technologist Diploma in Environmental Management from an institute of technology
  • 3 years of experience related to the environmental management of construction, operations, maintenance and waste management / pollution prevention issues

 

Additional Information

  • Trained to conduct ISO14001:2015 Environmental Management System audits and ability to provide guidance on compliance is an asset

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to build strong interpersonal relationships at all levels of the organization highly desirable
  • Must be able to work in confined space
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs.
  • Must be able to work at heights > 10 feet
  • Occasional travel across various locations in BC may be required
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license
  • Must be able to perform all physical requirements of the role
