Powertech has an exciting and challenging opportunity for two Electrical Engineers to join a team of professionals based at Powertech Labs in Surrey, B.C.

Department Overview

The Distribution Grid Management Department offers a broad range of technology and engineering solutions through SCADA engineering, protection and control development and distribution automation.  The department carries out a variety of value added projects for electric utilities, manufacturers and R&D organizations.

Position Overview

As a member of the Grid Modernization Team, the selected candidate will assist with technical work as well as project management and coordination of tasks across the projects (grid impact, demand management, DER, distribution automation, NERC CIP and Communication Technology). This is a hands-on client focused role that will appeal to those who enjoy hands on engineering work as well as taking ownership of delivering a project from start to finish.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in the planning, preparation and execution of projects, tests and deliverables according to international standards and customer requirements in the laboratory and the field.
  • Participate in design of test methods and put them into practice
  • Coordinate projects or components of projects including scheduling work and tracking costs in accordance with company’s quality controls and leveraging company resources and processes
  • Prepare detailed technical reports
  • Maintain detailed documentation throughout all phases of testing
  • Promote Powertech services to existing and potential clients in order to provide a flow of projects and work for the group and Powertech
  • Respond to requests for quotations and requests for proposals from clients, and provide detailed technical proposals, cost estimates, and work schedules.
  • Develop innovative engineering techniques and apply theoretical and practical knowledge in testing, analysis and problem resolution
  • Maintain professional relationships and communication with other departments, outside consultants, contractors and suppliers in order to effectively and efficiently gather and relay information and resolve issues of concern
  • Participate in maintenance and improvements of laboratory equipment and operations with emphasis on achieving high quality and cost-effectiveness
  • Attract new business opportunities

Qualifications

  • An electrical engineering degree from a qualified University.  An advanced degree in Power Engineering or related area is preferred.
  • Registered or eligible for registration as a Professional Engineer or Engineer in Training with Engineers and Geoscientists BC

Required technical experience and knowledge

  • Strong knowledge of transmission and distribution systems, equipment and processes.
  • Minimum of 4 years project or on-site experience as an electrical engineer.
  • Experience with one more of the following areas in Grid Modernization (industrial experience preferred, academic project work may be considered if applicable)
    • Commissioning, testing and validation of medium voltage electric grid equipment.
    • Distribution automation
    • Grid impact management of end use devices (electric vehicles, load management devices and commercial building management systems)
    • Wireless Tele Communications and RF
    • Distributed energy resource (DER) modeling and distribution system planning using PSCAD, SKM or other similar tools
  • 2-4 years of Project Management experience
  • Technical knowledge in Electric Utility Engineering
  • Project management accreditation or formal training will be an asset
  • Proficiency with MS office suite including MS Project
