The Role

The Director, Operations & CFO is a key leadership role at BC Tech with responsibility for overseeing the day to day business operations of BC Tech, including financial reporting and analysis, operation of the facilities BC Tech Hub and Cube operations, information technology and tenant services.

You will report to the CEO and be an integral member of the leadership team - a strongly collaborative group of mission-driven people who set the bar high and deliver. You will also work closely with BC Tech’s Board of Directors and Audit Committee in support of the CEO.

You will be an experienced leader, passionate about operations, optimizing results through robust planning, processes and attention to detail but also able to take a strategic view to manage risk and prioritize for impact. 

 

Key areas of responsibility are:

Overall:

The Director, Operations & CFO will play a key role in managing operations at the Hub and Cube facilities, as well as providing strategic business advice and counsel to the CEO, leading planning, forecasting and reporting activities and working with department budget owners to enhance cost, contract management and value for money, stimulating proactive thinking throughout the organization.

Specifically:

Business Operations

  • Manages the overall operation of the BC Tech Hub and Cube
  • Manages the IT system and all other relevant vendors to ensure effectiveness and efficiency in BC Tech’s Operations
  • Responsible for planning capital improvements and expenditures
  • Leads any capital projects on lease renewals or new leases, or renovation projects controlling risk and managing business outcomes through close control of contractual terms and negotiation with other parties
  • Manages tenant operations team, including the Hub and Cube Operations Leads.

Financial Management and Reporting

  • Oversee day to day control of accounting and finance activities including monthly, quarterly and year end reporting, financial reports and analysis required for the CEO, Board of Directors, Audit Committee, Auditors and Management as required
  • Continuously review and communicate key trends and variances in revenue, cash and expenses vs prior year and vs target to enable the right action to be taken in a timely manner to deliver the committed results for the year.
  • Serve as the main contact for external auditors and the Audit Committee of the Board as well as for senior management
  • Direct and coach the full time Controller

Financial Planning and Leadership

  • Work with the CEO and other members of the senior team to undertake strategic and business planning and evaluation for the organization based on key metrics
  • Deliver the inputs and outputs required by the Board of Directors for annual, quarterly and monthly planning
  • Provide support to and attend meetings of the Board of Directors and Audit Committee as required
  • Take a leadership role in the organization, acting for the CEO as required and taking the role of champion of results execution, delivery and ‘no excuses’ in terms of delivering on commitments made to ourselves, our mission and our stakeholders

 Requirements

  • Practical, hands on facilities or operations management experience
  • Contract management and vendor management negotiation experience
  • Professional Accounting Designation with a minimum of 10 years of relevant work experience (not-for-profit experience preferred)
  • Strong Canadian GAAP knowledge and financial statement disclosure
  • Strong financial acumen and analytical agility – quick and adept at analysis
  • Proven prioritization, time management and detail orientation
  • Exceptional project management skills – delivers results whatever it takes whilst keeping others motivated and engaged
  • Organized and proactive to ensure delivery to tight and emergent deadlines and priorities
  • Self-motivated, results driven, prefers to work in a fast-paced dynamic environment
  • Effective written and interpersonal communication skills
