MarineLabs is a Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) company that owns and operates a growing fleet of IoT ocean weather instruments on both coasts of North America, producing reliable high-resolution data products in real-time for our customers in various sectors of the blue economy.

We're currently looking for a DevOps Engineer. The work involves provisioning, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance of cloud infrastructure across a number of internal and external-facing services we currently run, and those yet to be developed on our R&D roadmap. This role's focus is on continuously improving the fault-tolerance of MarineLabs' distributed cloud systems to maintain high service levels for our customers, as well as supporting and streamlining the development, testing, and deployment of new application code and infrastructure in coordination with software developer teammates. The DevOps Engineer is adept at deploying, configuring, maintaining, and monitoring cloud services and infrastructure, writing clear and robust deploy scripts, and reducing or eliminating work through automation and replication.

The candidate will ideally have:
  • 4+ years experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies including some or all of VPC, IAM, ALB/ELB, ECR/ECS, RDS, SQS, S3, CloudFormation, Lambda, Security Groups, Elasticache (Redis), OpenSearch (Elasticsearch)
  • 3+ years experience with Docker, Terraform, and/or related orchestration and configuration management technologies
  • Experience with infrastructure monitoring and alerting tools
  • Experience with setting up and managing test-driven development and CI/CD tools e.g. CircleCI, Jenkins
  • Experience with the software development life cycle and revision control tools such as git
  • Experience with information and application security concepts including PKI/certificate-based authentication and multi-factor authentication
  • Experience with meeting and maintaining adherance to compliance frameworks, e.g. SOC2, GDPR, CMMC
  • Experience in Linux system administration
  • Experience with Python and Bash scripting
  • Strong work ethic, attention to detail, and excellent communication skills
  • Strong desire to learn, ability to follow clear instructions, and not afraid to ask questions
  • Familiarity with marine or ocean environment and/or technology is an asset

Responsibilities
  • Deploy and track releases of cloud infrastructure / services
  • Set up and maintain infrastructure and application monitoring solutions
  • Monitor and maintain performance of cloud infrastructure operation and security compliance
  • Identify opportunities to improve existing deployment methods and provisioning/scaling
  • Set up and manage of Continuous Integration pipelines
  • Troubleshoot and triage system incidents, sometimes in real time
  • Research and evaluate new technologies and tools according to organization needs
  • Document designs, deployment, configuration, maintenance work and troubleshooting procedures

Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in Software Engineering / Computer Science or equivalent
  • 4+ years experience in a DevOps role in a professional setting
  • Both junior and intermediate roles are available, so experience and salary will be considered in both these contexts


The position is full time and offers flexibility in working locations (remote from home, but preference is for employees based in or near Victoria, BC), with occasional team meetings at the office / lab in Victoria.
