Data Analyst

Reporting to the Manager, Service Analysis, the Data Analyst will be responsible for providing internal and external stakeholders with accurate, relevant information in the appropriate format in a timely manner to ensure that they are sufficiently informed to make decisions.

Acting with a strong customer-centric focus, the Data Analyst is responsible for monitoring, analyzing and evaluating existing and proposed transit services through data collected from demographic or census information, as well as onboard technology, including but not limited to, automatic passenger counters, vehicle location technology and electronic fare boxes. Such data includes ridership, fare revenue and schedule adherence.  The Data Analyst will be required to present data to meet the needs of a broad range of audiences, including through the development of reports or graphics to support the publication of documents and presentations.

Finally, the Data Analyst will also play a key role in ensuring key data are appropriately cleansed, organized, and maintained.


  • Manage the design, implementation and maintenance of reports within Service Analysis, including report design, process flows, testing and documentation
  • Provides exceptional customer service in working with internal and external stakeholders in order to evaluate and meet stakeholder requirements
  • Performance analysis and reporting of ridership, on-time performance and run-times for transit services, particularly in communities equipped with real-time and automatic passenger counting technology
  • Enhancement of business intelligence reporting suite and reports to ensure they are consistent with prevailing requirements
  • Employs a variety of software platforms, including business intelligence tools and GIS mapping software to deliver information in the appropriate format to provide maximum value to the user 
  • Utilizes an intimate knowledge of the wide variety of data collected by BC Transit and combines this data to provide creative solutions to stakeholder requests
  • Cleanse, analyse and organize data within an agreed to framework to ensure ongoing data integrity
  • Provide demographic, topographic and administrative information to facilitate the creation of corporate and service planning documents
  • Monitoring operational compliance of on-board technologies and coordinating with vendors and internal departments as required to ensure ongoing sustainment
  • Creating quality assurance processes to monitor the quality of data derived from on-board technologies and coordinating with vendors and internal departments as required to ensure that data is of the necessary standard to meet stakeholder information requirements
  • Analyzes and researches trends related to planning issues, demographics, employment and travel behavior within the transit industry
  • Regularly review data to verify validity and ensuring that data consistency standards are met
  • Design and participate in data collection surveys and coordinate the activities of survey/project participants as required
  • Other duties as required


  • Degree or diploma in computer science, information management, statistics, or equivalent
  • Advanced knowledge of data acquisition, processing and analysis
  • 3+ years of data mining, analysis and reporting experience
  • Transit experience and knowledge of onboard technology would be considered an asset, including Hastus scheduling software
  • Demonstrated exceptional ability with reporting software and business intelligence tools and GIS mapping software (preferably ArcGIS and QGIS)
  • Strong customer service mentality
  • Strong relational and dimensional data modeling and database design skills
  • Experience with ETL, SQL, relational & non-relational databases and data warehouse solutions
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Initiative, drive and an ability to thrive in a changing environment
