Powertech has an exciting and challenging opportunity for a Civil Technician to join a team of professionals based at Powertech Labs in Surrey B.C.

Role Overview

Performs a variety of set ups and tests on a variety of mechanical equipment, materials and components in the laboratory or field.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

1. Performs the set up of and oversees the testing and examination of specific items within the materials discipline by investigating, recording measurements, operating specialized test instruments, determining parameters, locating failure points, troubleshooting, identifying and reporting causes of test equipment malfunctions and preparing related reports.

2. Inspects various projects and products to ensure conformity to established standards, specifications and procedures; advises clients of approved procedures and applies standards or modifications of approved test methods and procedures; recommends corrective measures or advises project /laboratory leader of unusual problems.

3. Advises, demonstrates and trains technical staff on specific techniques regarding meeting specifications and standards.

4. Discusses and provides cost and time required for testing to customers.

5. Drafts technical reports of results including supporting data and recommendations which may include preparing schematic and working drawings.

6. Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job. This includes the performance of duties across disciplines in a job of the same or lower job group.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required

  • Good working knowledge of how to prepare tests for a variety of mechanical equipment, materials and components.
  • Good working knowledge of mechanical and materials analysis procedures, testing standards and quality assurance principles.
  • Working knowledge of how to calibrate and troubleshoot the related instrumentation.
  • Good knowledge of related testing standards and procedures good analytical skills.
  • Ability to modify existing test methods to perform unique tests or achieve different results.
  • Ability to demonstrate and train technical staff of specific testing techniques.
  • Good written and verbal communications skills.
  • Good organizational and planning skills.
  • Basic report writing skills.
  • Basic knowledge of related safety and WHMIS regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office applications.

Experience, Training and Education

Completion of a Certificate of Technology from an Institute of Technology in Civil and two (2) years of experience working in a lab setting up and performing tests on materials and components.

Additional Information

  • This vacancy is for the Civil Lab
  • Completion of a Certificate in Civil required for this role
  • Experience of soil and concrete testing highly desirable
  • Experience with the following geotechnical tests highly desirable: compaction testing, grain size analysis, Atterberg limit, permeability testing, soil electric resistivity testing
  • Experience with the following concrete tests highly desirable: strength evaluation, air content evaluation, slump testing
  • Scale model testing soil/concrete/wood poles highly desirable (construction of scale model, instrumentation of model)
  • Cathodic protection inspection highly desirable
  • Experience related to construction and field testing associated with civil structures are highly desirable in the following:  concrete quality control testing during construction, soil quality control testing during construction
  • Experience in corrosion and coating inspection would be an asset
  • This is a hands on role and requires recent experience doing hands on technical work
  • Must be able to travel for field work to dams, transmission towers and substations
  • 30% travel may be required for this role
  • Must be able to work in confined space
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work at heights > 10 feet
  • Must have a valid class 5 driver’s license
  • Must be able to perform all physical requirements of the role
