Powertech has an exciting and challenging opportunity for multiple Chemical Technologists to join a team of professionals based at Powertech Labs in Surrey B.C.

Role Overview

This position provides work leadership and laboratory leadership to other staff; project leadership in chemical testing and research projects; develops and prepares technical reports; liaises with others within the industry to secure future work for Powertech.

Major Responsibilities and Duties

  • Acts as the chemical laboratory work leader for and performs the same duties as one or more technologists/technicians
  • Provides project leadership through planning, organizing and undertaking applied chemical testing and research projects; develops and writes reports incorporating conclusions; designs and sets up experimental equipment or rigs; designs components, calibrates, maintains and troubleshoots laboratory apparatus and equipment
  • Provides consulting services on matters such as explaining intent of specifications, problem solving, product substitutions, job sequencing, operational or equipment design constraints affecting job quality
  • Develops and writes job instruction manuals and Powertech job specifications
  • Performs administrative support functions such as budget preparation, variance reviews, planning work flow, recommending and overseeing repair procedures and organizing work with other areas of Powertech
  • Liaises with others within the industry to secure future work for Powertech; discusses, negotiates and commits to costs and time involved in testing
  • Designs, modifies and adapts novel equipment to perform new or unusual tests; conducts, commissions and accepts new equipment or apparatus
  • Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties which do not affect the rating of the job. This includes the performance of duties across disciplines in a job of the same or lower job group

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities Required

  • Excellent working knowledge of qualitative/quantitative chemical analysis procedures for the testing of complex samples from a variety of sources
  • Excellent working knowledge of how to prepare and test oils, fuels, lubricants, soils, water and composite material
  • Good working knowledge of how to obtain on own and to provide advice and guidance to others on how to obtain soil and water samples
  • Good working knowledge of how to calibrate, maintain and repair related chemical analysis instrumentation and equipment and apply accepted testing standards
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills
  • Excellent technical report writing skills
  • Working knowledge of how to interpret and adapt chemical laboratory testing procedures
  • Good working knowledge of chemical analysis procedures, testing standards and quality assurance principles
  • Ability to modify existing test methods to perform unique tests or achieve different results
  • Basic knowledge of trigonometry and calculus
  • Good knowledge of related testing standards and procedures
  • Good team leadership skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Good organizational and planning skills
  • Good project management skills
  • Good marketing skills
  • Good knowledge of related safety and WHMIS regulations
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office applications

Experience, Training and Education

National Diploma of Technology from an Institute of Technology in the Environmental and Industrial Chemistry discipline with over 8 years of related experience. B.Sc. in a relevant discipline is preferred.

Additional Information

• In-depth knowledge and laboratory experience in one of the following three analytical chemistry disciplines (Please indicate area of in-depth knowledge/specialization when applying):
       1.      Environmental,
       2.      Tribology (lubricating fluids, fuels and coolants),
       3.      Insulating fluids for electrical equipment
• A strong working knowledge of ISO 17025 accreditation requirements and laboratory QA/QC principles and practices
• A strong working knowledge of statistical methods and data interpretation
• Demonstrated experience with method development, validation and verification
• Expertise with writing and updating standard operating procedures (SOPs)
• Experience with operating and maintaining one or more of the following instruments: GC, GC-MS, HPLC, ICP
• Good understanding of laboratory information management systems (LIMS)
• Expertise in process improvement and optimization
• Possess an eye for detail (when necessary) yet stay focused on the big picture
