We acknowledge that Bench headquarters is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
We're a committed and talented group of diverse people working hard to solve a real, universal problem for millions of entrepreneurs: businesses need to understand their financial performance, but for many smaller ones, this means a trade-off between doing their books and running their businesses. Bench solves this dilemma by taking bookkeeping off of their hands. We've paired smart humans with incredibly powerful software to develop the fastest, most efficient bookkeeping service in history. This lets us provide monthly and yearly financials at an incredibly accessible price, giving business owners the time, confidence, and knowledge they need to be successful.
Bench is growing fast. Recently, we've onboarded our 9,000th client and our 500th employee. We have a clear, funded path to profitability, and a roadmap that we believe will rapidly accelerate the trajectory of our business. We're looking for the brightest minds who love solving tough problems to join us on this incredible journey, in pursuit of bringing financial mastery to our clients.
What you'll be getting up to:
As Bookkeeping Support Associate, you tackle problems no one else can. You ensure that the most complex Bench clients receive books in an accurate and timely manner. You assist other Accounting Associates across Operations in the development of their bookkeeping skill while constantly expanding your own. Through your work you allow Bench to retain clients we'd otherwise be unable to serve.
You'll be a good fit for the Bookkeeping Support Team if you're energized by complex problems. You'll be a good fit if you understand that each support request is an opportunity to increase your skills and that the best way to solve future problems is to address them now!
You'll be expected to help any associate with any bookkeeping issue, but you don't need to know everything right on day 1. You'll have the Bookkeeping Support Team, and the Quality and PRO teams, to help you become the best bookkeeper at Bench.
Data driven: if you're someone that thrives off of metrics, statistics, and quarterly targets then you'll fit right in. You'll be navigating through Tableau looking for trends in your own work and the experience of your clients, working with Salesforce to interact with our other departments and manage your workflow, and using the wide variety of tools in G Suite to collaborate with your team members.
Constant learning: A lot of the work you do will take place on Bench's custom-built software. Our platform contains a robust client dashboard where you'll identify what work needs to be completed for each of the businesses you work with, a series of tools that allow you to create journal entries, carry out adjustments, and work with financial statements, as well as a built-in messaging app to communicate with your clients. It's a lot to take in, and unless you own a small business in the United States, you'll be seeing it all for the first time. And that's okay. As long as you're someone who's eager to take on new challenges and quick to learn new concepts, we'll get you up to speed in no time.

Bookkeeping principles - When other resources fail, Accounting Associates trust you to solve their problems. You must be able to learn processes, but this role requires the ability to understand the why behind those processes as well.
Communication - You help Bench clients through empowering others! Working with Accounting Associates on other teams, you'll need to be able to effectively explain complex concepts. You'll occasionally be called on to help explain bookkeeping to clients as well! You need to be adaptable in your approaches and able to notice when an explanation isn't being understood by the other party.
Resilience - Some problems are hard to solve. A willingness to try, fail, and keep going when the work isn't easy is a must. Particularly when we're up against tight client deadlines! Some days you'll be on a roll, but some days you'll be slogging years of work for a single high-priority client.
Accountability - You will be responsible for tackling high priority problems and will be required to proactively secure the support you need to ensure we're getting work completed within the agreed upon time frame. Candidates need to exhibit self-organization and hold themselves accountable for responding to submitters.
Accounting knowledge - education towards DAP or CPA can be helpful when researching new processes and solving novel problems.
Excel - the ability to create templates, write macros, and troubleshoot existing macros is an asset.

We believe that unchecked biases disproportionately impact the most marginalized people in society-including but not limited to BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+ people, immigrants, and people with disabilities.
