Evonik Industries, its Burnaby, B.C. site, specializes in parenteral formulation development and manufacturing process design and implementation at small, intermediate, and large/commercial scales. This enables manufacturing of complex lipid-based formulations of therapeutic agents for preclinical and clinical testing in its state-of-the-art R&D and manufacturing facilities and transfer of drug product manufacturing to commercial facilities. Core manufacturing technologies include liposome extrusion, micro-mixing, tangential flow filtration (TFF) and sterile filtration with availability of small to large-scale equipment.

We are seeking an individual to fill the role of Associate Scientist working in R&D.  This role encompasses full responsibility for project development including but not limited to pharmaceutical formulation development, scale-up process development and analytical characterization of formulations; the individual in this position will be responsible for ensuring that project milestones are met.

Essential/Primary Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

 

  • Provides technical expertise and leadership to support development of multiple programs;
  • Manages timelines in conjunction with the project management team;
  • Develops formulations of small molecular weight drugs, peptides/proteins and nucleotide-based drugs to enable preclinical testing;
  • Performs scale-up process development and manufactures drug formulations for toxicology studies;
  • Characterizes the physical and chemical properties of drugs and drug formulations;
  • Prepares reports and technical presentations for internal use and for clients;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Responsible for communicating on the technical aspects of projects with clients;
  • Provides guidance, training and supervision to direct reports and junior staff.
  • Closely works with the Process Development, Analytical and cGMP manufacturing groups in the organization;

 Education:

  • MSc or PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry or a Life Sciences discipline with a minimum of 5 years formulation research experience preferably in the pharmaceutical industry.

Skills:

  • Minimum of 5 years hands-on experience preferably in lipid-based drug delivery and at least three of these areas:

(a) Other non-lipid-based drug delivery or other formulation approaches, (b) Physicochemical characterization of drugs and formulations, (c) Analytical techniques such as HPLC, (d) Formulation scale-up, (e) Preclinical testing of drug formulations.

  • Familiarity working in a GMP laboratory environment is an asset;
  • Supervisory experience;
    • Project leadership experience;
  • Strong written and oral communications skil
