Position: Assistant Controller

Department: Finance & Administration

Location: Maple Ridge, B.C. Canada

 

Position Summary/Objective:

The Assistant Controller is responsible for overseeing, supporting and performing duties related to the accounting function, including but not limited to cash management, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and fixed assets; as well as preparing journal entries and supporting the financial reporting process. The Controller also supports the Director of Finance in other accounting functions including management reporting, account analysis, budgeting, cash flow and payroll.

The Assistant Controller plays a critical role in supporting the Accounting and Finance department to ensure that all accounting processes and documentation are completed in a timely and accurate manner.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and deliver accurate and timely internal financial reports based on business requirements to support effective management and ensure responsible fiscal management, including completion of all journal entries, month-end working papers, adjusting entries and account reconciliations
  • Manage all aspects of the general ledger and the integrity of the accounting data
  • Supervise Payroll, Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable staff
  • Support the Supply Chain department in overseeing the month-end close of inventory
  • Prepare and submit all Government Remittances: HST/Corporate Tax instalments
  • Support the annual financial statement audit with the external accountants
  • Prepare monthly bank reconciliations
  • Oversee the fixed asset continuity schedule/depreciation schedule
  • Review biweekly payroll
  • Prepare the working papers for the monthly borrowing base certificate
  • Prepare monthly sales commission reports
  • Prepare a weekly cash flow report
  • Manage new customer account administration
  • Support the annual budgeting process, including measurement and analysis
  • Ensures corporate policy and standards are maintained at a satisfactory level.
  • Lead, coach and mentor the team consistent with company policies, guidelines, and standards
  • Manage user access and administrative rights for the company’s accounting software
  • Research accounting topics in support of complex accounting transactions
  • Attend professional development courses to maintain designation in good standing

Reporting Relationships

The Assistant Controller reports to the Controller

The Accountant, Payroll Administrator, Cost Accountant, A/P Clerk and A/R Clerk report to the Assistant Controller.

Qualifications

  • Certified accounting designation preferred
  • CPA-CMA in progress may be considered
  • Post-secondary education in Business or a related field with 5+ years of experience
  • Preferably 2+ years in a manufacturing environment
  • Experience working in an ERP environment
  • VISUAL ERP is considered a strong asset
  • Familiarity with multi-currency transactions
  • Working knowledge of consolidation procedures
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work with a high degree of accuracy
  • Excellent planning, organizing, multitasking and time management skills
  • A collaborative self-starter with a high level of initiative and flexibility
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills
  • Adaptable and flexible to a changing environment
  • Team player with a positive attitude
  • Good mathematical skills
  • Strong understanding of business processes
  • Strong computer skills, Advanced level for Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Familiarity with accounting software packages is required
