The Opportunity:

WSP has a new and exciting opportunity for an Archaeological Field Supervisor to join our Heritage team in our Fort St. John, BC location for the 2023 Field Season. This position is ideal for someone who is looking to gain Field Director in Training days in a variety of settings. WSP Field Directors and Senior Project Staff will work closely with you to find opportunities which supports your journey to becoming a Field Director in the Subarctic Boreal Forest culture area.

The successful candidate will be specifically hired to support existing project work. Field work may be on a variety of different schedules (e.g., 10 working days followed by 4 days off or 5 working days and then 2 off). Work is anticipated to start in May 2023 and extend through the fall and into the winter as needed. This is a temporary hourly position that may be extended or be shortened depending on changing schedules and/or weather conditions. There may be an opportunity for the position to become full-time.

A day in the life:

As an Archaeological Field Supervisor, your responsibilities will include:
  • Carrying out archaeological survey, test excavation, and mitigative excavation under the oversight of the Field Director and in compliance with Heritage Conservation Act permits;
  • Working independently or as a team with the Field Director to lead archaeological field programs;
  • Working in a variety of environments, such as all-weather conditions, rugged and semi-remote locations, and overnight accommodations in a camp or hotel setting;
  • Participating in Indigenous community relationship-building by working closely with community members in the field in a respectful and collaborative manner;
  • Undertaking analysis and preparing sections of technical reports and site forms;
  • Supervising junior staff and Indigenous workers where appropriate;
  • Participating in WSP's Health & Safety program;
  • Demonstrating a "Safety First" focus and acting as a role model to other staff;
  • Complying with WSP's Fit for Duty policy.

What you'll bring to WSP ...
  • An undergraduate degree in Archaeology or Anthropology with relevant cultural resource management experience;
  • Working towards your Field Director status in the Subarctic Boreal Forest culture area;
  • Experience identifying, recording, and evaluating the full range of archaeological site types expected in the Subarctic Boreal Forest culture area;
  • An aptitude for working collaboratively with Indigenous communities;
  • Proficiency with standard data collection equipment including GPS and hand-held tablets;
  • Proven oral and written communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills;
  • An ability to contribute to a positive teamwork environment as well as to work independently;
  • Solid MS Office skills;
  • Valid driver's licence (Class 5);
  • ATV/UTV and First Aid Certification would be considered an asset.
